The women of Savannah/Charleston (playing as a combined team) opened their 2013 season with a hard fought victory on the road against the Columbia Bombshells (SC). The scoring opened in the 5th minute when Savannah/Charleston winger, Jaicee Spangler, after good ball handling through the back line (unconverted) making the score 5-0. In the 13th minute the Savannah/Charleston women, after applying continued pressure to the Bombshells, flanker, Jules Sobutka, scored near the post after a well executed maul (unconverted) making the score 10-0. The Savannah/Charleston women continued the pressure and were quickly rewarded when outside center, Tucker Marrison, scooped up a loose ball she kicked ahead for another try (unconverted) making the score 15-0. However, the Bombshells were not to go away from the 1st half without responding when their scrumhalf scored in the 28th minute (unconverted) making the score 15-5. The remaining minutes of the 1st half were played well by both teams’ defenses and the half ended without either team making significant ground.
Halftime Score: Savannah/Charleston 15 – Columbia 5
The second half features great defense by both teams as neither was able to make substantial gains. Savannah/Charleston was finally able to capitalize on good field position when scrumhalf, Tara Barrett, made a nice pass to the flyhalf and looped her her for the score (unconverted) making the score 20-5 in the 68th minute. The rest of the game saw strong tackling from both sides and the final score reflected a well fought game by both teams. Congratulations go out to the ladies of both the Savannah Shamrocks and Charleston Hurricanes for opening the season with a tough road victory.
